Osteopathy

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an holistic form of specialised manual therapy which aims to address the underlying cause of your pain and discomfort. Osteopaths use hands on treatment including joint mobilisation, stretching and massage to relieve pain and discomfort. Osteopathy is based on the principle that your well-being depends on your entire body working well for you to function at your best.

Osteopaths are registered health professionals and are statutorily regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). We are also allied health professionals (like physiotherapists and occupational therapists). We are trained to screen for medical conditions and will tell you if you need to see another health professional such as your GP or midwife.

What can osteopathy help with?

Osteopathic treatment can be helpful for problems associated with many areas of the body and a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Antenatal and postnatal aches and pains
  • Back pain and sciatica
  • Neck and shoulder pain/stiffness
  • Headaches and migraine prevention
  • Muscle and joint pain and spasms
  • Jaw pain (TMJ dysfunction)
  • RSI
  • Arthritis

Osteopathy in Pregnancy

During pregnancy a woman’s body goes through significant physiological adaptations. As pregnancy progresses, women’s bodies change shape and size in a relatively short period to accommodate a growing baby. These things can put additional pressure on the body, especially the spine, pelvis and hips, often causing some discomfort.

I have lots of experience treating mums-to-be. Osteopathy is safe in pregnancy and can help you to feel more comfortable and remain fit, active and strong for birth.

I have also undertaken Biomechanics for Birth training with Registered Midwife Molly O’Brien which compliments my osteopathic treatment.

Kind Words

I saw Karly on recommendation (from another mum) during the third trimester of pregnancy when I was planning for a VBAC. Karly’s approach was thorough and very holistic, from very gentle physical work to discussions and tips about visualisation and pelvic floor release during labour. These were utterly invaluable in contributing to my successful VBAC and in my pelvic floor recovery, I still remember how her advice played through my mind and helped me focus whilst in the throes of second stage labour!

Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help with my neck problems! Thanks to all the exercises you gave me I’ve had no issues since our last session!

I was experiencing neck pain and headaches. Karly is really professional, knowledgeable and approachable and to top it off has magic hands! She treated my neck as part of initial treatment and follow up, and gave me suggestions to make some simple changes and useful exercises to do at home which really made a difference. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Karly!
